How to Search Cases by Name
Nebraska JUSTICE covers all 93 counties, and Kearney is one of them. Its public one-time search looks up a party to a case. Witnesses are not the target. Type the name as the court record spells it. Then trim the results with Kearney, court type, year, and case type. Keep in mind that County Court and District Court are separate choices in the system. Traffic citations, small claims, and most misdemeanors start in County Court. Felony trials and domestic-relations cases sit in District Court. Picking the right court saves time.
- Open the JUSTICE one-time search, accept its terms, and begin a party-name search.
- Enter the party name, using the individual or entity choice as appropriate.
- Limit the search to Kearney, then select County or District Court and add a year or case-type filter when known.
- Check the case caption, court, and case type before opening public detail or an available image.
- Call the appropriate clerk if the result points to a paper record, a certified copy, or a restriction question.
Note: A name match is only a candidate. Confirm the court, caption, and case details before you rely on any single result.
Kearney County JUSTICE Filters
The subscriber demonstration form lays out the deeper filter set. Party Name comes first, with an Individual or Entity choice. Kearney appears as one option in the County selector. From there you can set Case Year, Court Type, Case Type, Case Subtype, Judge, and Attorney Name, plus sort order and an optional client memo. That memo is a subscriber billing note. It is not part of the court record.
| Field label | Type | Required | Kearney County use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Party Name | Text | Yes for name searches | Use the court-record spelling; witnesses are not the party index. |
| Individual or Entity | Radio choice | Choose one | Select Entity for a business name. |
| County | Multi-select | Not always | Select Kearney to narrow the statewide index. |
| Case Year and Court Type | Dropdowns | Optional | Choose County or District Court when known. |
| Case Type and Subtype | Multi-select | Optional | Use related categories to refine a broad search. |
| Judge or Attorney | Multi-select | Optional | Use only for a known matter; assignments can change. |
The official demonstration image shows the sequence of name, county, court, and case filters.
Statewide name searches can return piles of unrelated records, and these filters cut that pile down fast.
How to Search by Case Number
A case number is usually the fastest search key for Kearney County court records. Copy it exactly. Match how it appears on a citation, a court notice, or a clerk email. JUSTICE does search by case number, though the court publishes no Kearney-specific numbering table. So never guess at a local prefix from another court or a private case. A placeholder like CASE-NUMBER-VERIFY only demonstrates one thing. The whole number must be entered intact, digits and all.
Do not know the court level? Run separate searches in Kearney County Court. Then try Kearney District Court too. County Court handles traffic, misdemeanor, small-claims, probate, guardianship, and ordinance matters. District Court holds felony trials plus general-jurisdiction civil and domestic cases. Even after a number matches, check it against the caption. Confirm the filing date too. Then call it the right case.
Kearney County Case Search Limits
One-time JUSTICE access is a single transaction, not a subscription. The live terms grant access for three calendar days. They cap the display at 30 records and charge you even if the search comes back empty. Expect more than 30 hits? The form tells you to refine the search or take the first 30. That cap is a display limit, nothing more. It does not mean Kearney County has only 30 cases tied to a name.
The fee has moved recently. The live form shows a $17 one-time charge. An older state help page still lists $15, and the December 2025 Judicial Branch release says the fee rose to $17 on January 1, 2026. Read the transaction screen before you pay. Also note that fresh filings can take about 24 hours to show up. A brand-new case may need a later search. Or a quick call to the clerk.
The official pre-search screen posts those terms and the fee notice before the name-search flow begins.
Portal terms change, so check the current transaction screen instead of trusting older fee text.
What a Case Search Shows
A Kearney County case result can include a case summary, parties, court, case type, filing date, status, judge, financial information, and the Register of Actions. That Register is the running list of case activity. It covers filings, hearings, orders, notices, and other activity in the case. It is not the full electronic file by default. Some eligible documents appear as linked images, especially anything filed or uploaded after April 16, 2008.
| Header | Court level, Kearney County, case number, caption or subject, filing date, status, judge, and case type where displayed. |
|---|---|
| Party block | Public party names, attorneys, and representation roles, without private addresses or sensitive identifiers. |
| Register of Actions | Dated court activity, including filings, hearings, orders, and notices. |
| Financial block | Costs, judgments, payments, balances, or restitution where the public record displays them. |
| Document links | Eligible pleadings, orders, judgments, exhibits, or images when remotely available. |
| Disposition | A displayed plea, verdict, dismissal, judgment, sentence, or other outcome term. |
Search results can help you pin down a date. For a current or future setting, a dedicated Kearney County court dates search is the better tool.
Kearney County Case Detail Terms
JUSTICE uses several labels that sound alike. Treating them as distinct parts of the record keeps a search from proving more than the public result actually shows.
- Case Summary
- A high-level public description of the case and its key fields.
- Case Detail
- The expanded record view available after opening a result.
- Party Listing
- The public people or entities associated with the case, when shown.
- Register of Actions
- The dated activity history, rather than a complete file replacement.
- Electronic image
- A filed document image that is eligible for remote display.
Court access rules control what the public sees. Even a detailed result can leave out a document or personal data that is sealed, confidential, or simply not designated for remote access.
County vs Statewide Case Search
Kearney County posts no separate online docket database outside JUSTICE. The statewide portal serves as the online case-search layer, and its county and court filters build the local search from it. The Kearney courthouse handles free public inspection. Its clerks also provide copies, transcripts, and answers to questions the portal cannot answer. That local office is where a paper file lives.
| Access path | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| JUSTICE one-time search | One public party-name or case lookup. | $17 working current fee, 30-record limit, and a no-result charge. |
| Subscriber search | Repeated searches across counties, years, judges, or attorneys. | Requires Nebraska.gov registration; current detail notice says $2 per record. |
| Minden courthouse terminal | Free public inspection of public case information and eligible images. | Copies and certified records follow clerk procedures. |
| Court clerk | Certified copy, paper file, transcript, or access question. | Fee, intake method, and restriction status require confirmation. |
The subscriber service page describes a repeat-use route, not a separate Kearney County database.
Subscription access adds filters and repeated use; it does not remove court-record restrictions.
Kearney County JUSTICE Access Routes
Remote JUSTICE access is one option among several. Need a County Court case? Call the County Court clerk at 308-832-2719. For a District Court file, the District Court clerk takes calls at 308-832-1742. The Minden courthouse also has a terminal. Anyone can inspect a Kearney County court docket there for free. The statewide eServices description adds that public access exists at courthouses and some law libraries. Certified copies and transcripts go through the clerk who holds the case. Older paper records go there too. So do files without an online image.
The District Court page lists a mailing address of PO Box 208, Minden, NE 68959. Its fax number is 308-832-0636. Check with the office first before sending anything by mail, fax, or email. The courts publish no single email intake, drop box, or response deadline. Each request depends on the clerk's own practice. Is it unclear which office holds the docket? A county public-record request can go through the County Clerk. That route still cannot override court sealing or copy rules.
Use the right record holder: The ordinary County Clerk handles county administration and forwarding, while court clerks maintain trial-court dockets and case files.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
Public access to a Kearney County court docket has firm limits. JUSTICE never shows Social Security numbers or witness data. Some material stays off limits. Juvenile, adoption, sealed, confidential, and protected records may appear only in part. Others may not appear at all. Paying for a search does not unlock a restricted record, and even a courthouse terminal runs under the court's public-access rules.
Nebraska Supreme Court Rules §1-801 through §1-808 control who may see electronic court records. Rule §1-804 covers access through an authorized provider or a courthouse terminal. Rule §1-808 lists the exclusions and the duties tied to restricted, sealed, or confidential material. A case lookup may come back blank. Ask the clerk which process applies. Do not guess why.
Kearney County Search Technology Watch
The JUSTICE portal still runs the show. This modernization notice from May 2025 calls the system aging, built on old AS400 technology, and asks vendors for ideas on a replacement. That matters to anyone doing a Kearney County docket search. A new case management system could rename the portal, change its screens, alter fees, or handle court document images differently. Some things will hold steady. Kearney County criminal docket work stays separate from civil filings. The local clerk remains the fallback for a case lookup.
Fees shift too. The Branch's December 2025 fee announcement shows why court records costs deserve a fresh look before you pay anything. Always confirm current charges with the clerk.
Check the portal's live terms when you actually transact. Then rely on the court clerk for any record the online layer does not deliver.
